Poetry Rehab 101: Away

Walking_away_from_the_Third_World

Away

Away, away
Have to find a way
To express how
I feel when you’re
Not here.

Away.

Such an innocent
Sounding little word
But the source
Of so much pain in
This world.

Away!

Absent fathers,
Missing mothers,
Children gone,
Friends forgotten and
Loved ones lost.

Away.

Don’t go,
Stay here
With me.
We’ll face
The fear
Together.
Don’t go

Away.

Once again, shoutout to Mara Eastern, who organises these wonderful prompts.

  1. Fantastic, Benedict! Truly moving, as Andy said, and probably the most powerful poem of yours yet (that I’ve read). Perhaps I’m biased for I’m currently away on a writing and reading retreat, missing my loved ones crazily and all, but your words truly got to me. Sometimes, though, one has to face the fear in the distance, learn how to deal with everything on one’s own (or at least that’s what I’m telling myself). Cheers!

    1. Glad you liked it, it’s one of my favourites too, tried to play a bit more with rhythm this time than I normally do which I enjoyed (and hopefully it worked)! I hope you’re enjoying your retreat, it often only reinforces our love for those we miss, but hopefully it is worth it!

  2. This poem is brilliant. It’s clear that a lot of thought and creativity went into it. I love the photo, the content of the poem and the use of poetic devices like powerful repetition and word play. It’s beyond brilliant…

    1. Believe it or not, I think this is the fastest I have ever written a poem, and it’s also one of my favourites. It just flowed so naturally once I started, must have been a perfect prompt for the writing mood I was in 🙂

  3. Strong words and emotions which are mesmerizing and keeping me in their unforgiving iron grip…
There’s so much pain, so much hurt and grief!

You are a poet. A great and honest poet….
